How Much Does It Cost To Clean An Area Rug?

Most professionally cleaned area rugs cost somewhere between $50 and $200. That's a wide range, and where your rug falls in it comes down to four questions.

What is it made of?

Material is the biggest price lever. Synthetic rugs in polyester, nylon, or olefin are forgiving and quick to clean, so they sit at the low end. Wool is soft, durable, and fussy; the wrong chemistry can felt it or bleed the dyes, so it needs gentler products and more time. Cotton wants careful handling too. Silk blends and handmade pieces top the scale because one careless pass can do damage no refund fixes.

If you don't know what your rug is made of, check the tag on the underside before you clean anything or accept any quote.

How big is it?

No surprise here. A 3x5 accent rug is a fraction of the work of a 9x12 living room piece, and pricing scales with it. Some cleaners quote per square foot, others per rug size tier. Either is fine as long as the number is settled before the work starts.

What condition is it in?

A rug that just needs freshening is a quick job. Add set-in stains, pet odor, years of packed-in grit, or sun-faded fibers and the labor climbs. Pet urine in particular tends to reach the backing, and treating odor at that depth is real extra work, worth paying for once and doing right.

Who's doing it?

The DIY route runs about $30 for a rental machine plus cleaner, and for a cheap synthetic rug it can be a reasonable Saturday project: vacuum well, spot-clean gently, keep the water light, air-dry fully before the furniture goes back. The catch is that rental machines overwet, and residue or trapped moisture can leave a rug smelling worse than it started. On wool, on anything handmade, or on anything you'd be sad to ruin, the savings aren't worth the gamble.

The part most people don't know

Plenty of rug cleaners want you to surrender the rug: they haul it to a plant, clean it there, and bring it back in a week or two. Safe-Dry skips all that. Our in-home rug cleaning happens on your floor, with the same low-moisture, soap-free process we use on carpet. The rug never leaves, it dries fast enough to use the same day, and there's no pickup fee padding the bill. Right now there's also $25 off rug cleaning on our coupons page.

For fine wool and heirloom pieces, our oriental and specialty rug service matches the method to the fiber and dye so the rug gets clean without getting hurt.

The honest bottom line: light maintenance on a durable rug, do it yourself. Anything valuable, smelly, stained, or delicate, hand it to someone who cleans rugs every day.

Curious what yours would run? It costs nothing to ask. Ring 901-530-8370 with the rug's size and material, or book the in-home cleaning and skip the drop-off circus entirely.
